Sam Harris’ career has spanned more than two decades in the public eye and run the gamut from singer/songwriter to stage, film, television actor to writer, producer, director. Born in Oklahoma, Sam performed in his first play when he was five and was known to jump on any makeshift stage, be it a wooden crate or a dining room table, and belt out a tune.
He left home at the age of 15 to pursue his career and received the Frank Sinatra Pop Singing Award where the legendary Chairman of the Board said to an enthusiastic audience, “This kid’s got `it’! Sam, don’t get any better till I get out of the business.”
Sam became a household name on Star Search in its premiere season as the grand champion. Millions of viewers tuned in each week to follow him as he created his own pop, gospel and theatre brand of emotionally charged performances.
Broadway called and Sam moved to New York, where he received a Drama Desk nomination for his role in Tommy Tune’s Grease. He stared in the Broadway National tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, where sales records were broken all over the country. Sam also starred in Cy Coleman’s The Life, for which he received the Drama-League Award as well as Tony, Outer Critic’s Circle and Drama Desk nominations. Sam also co-produced the television special “Love Letter to New York” and supervised and arranged several songs and supervised segments of “Michael Jackson’s 30 Year Anniversary Special”. He is now back in Los Angeles however he returned to New York in Mel Brook’s smash hit The Producers on Broadway.
Sam appeared on shows such as Arsenio Hall, The Joan Rivers Show, Merv Griffin, Geraldo, American Bandstand, Soul Train, The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Rosie, The View, Barbara Walters Show, and many more. Sam also performed a stirring “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the week following September 11th, 2001.
Sam now balancing his roles as father, husband, actor, recording artist, writer and all around entertainer. He recently completed a recurring role on “Rules of Engagement,” an appearance on “Tyra” about marriage rights, created an original role in the musical “The First Wives Club,” and is currently developing a television series and the now, re-ignited musical in which he stars as the darkly complex and charismatic Al Jolson, while he continues to perform in concert all over the country.

Barbara Reed Stitt, author of Food and Behavior, A Natural Connection had learned about the profound effects of food in the unlikely position of probation officer. The first thing she did with anyone who came under her care was to change their diet. Time and time again their lives turned around.
Appleton Central Alternative Charter High School (ACA) opened its doors in February of 1996 to give individualized attention to students struggling in the conventional school settings. Despite this close attention, students behavioral problems continued to be extremely problematic.
Barbara Stitt and her husband Paul, a biochemist, approached their local school (ACA) with an offer that was as unusual as it was generous. Take out the vending machines, take out the processed foods, and feed the students fresh, whole, nutritious food and watch their behavior improve. And the Stitts will pay the bill. In fact, since the Stitts owned Natural Ovens, a whole foods bakery, their company would send the school plenty of its own healthy fare AND place one of their own cooks on site at the school’s kitchen.
In 1997, ACA teamed up with Natural Ovens Bakery to offer the students a free, nutritious breakfast. The following year (the 1998-99 school year) Natural Ovens sponsored the installation of a full kitchen and dining service (offering both breakfast and lunch).
Appleton Central Alternative High School is, well, an “alternative school”; a place where problem students end up. Greg Bretthauer, the dean of students, was offered the job prior to the program and found the students “rude, obnoxious, and ill-mannered.” The school had so many problems with discipline and weapons violations that a police officer was recruited to be on the staff.
The new program had an instantaneous effect. In the state of Wisconsin, each school is required to file a report each year detailing the number of students who have dropped out, been expelled, committed suicide, or got caught using drugs or carrying weapons. Since the start of the program, the numbers at ACAHS have been the same each year, zero! This would be a stat that any public or private school would be proud of. For an alternative school, it’s nothing short of astonishing.
Appleton Central Alternative High School serves both a nutritious breakfast and lunch. There are no vending machines within the school and no carry-in food and/or beverages are allowed. In addition, ACAHS offers bottled water and encourages students to carry water bottles. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of Central students participate in the nutrition program.

These Parent Earth and 7th Empire Media productions, Lunch Encounters, a spoof of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Priceless, a Mastercard spoof, were created by three IATP Food & Society Fellows, Shalini Kantayya, Nicole Betancourt, and Debra Eschmeyer to raise awareness for the upcoming reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.
