British Railways re-built Merchant Navy Class No: 35028 Clan Line hustles West on the Down South-Western Windsor Main-Line at North Sheen (NSH) at the head of the Venice-Simplon Orient Express Down VSOE Luncheon Special from London-Victoria to Guildford. Clan Line will haul the Up train later this afternoon. It’s Friday 20th January 2012 at just before 13:00 hours and Clan Line was 2 minutes early. I had a bit of luck. The Kingston-on-Thames service train was 5 minutes late so, Network Rail let Clan Line go ahead with orders to move along. The result is Clan Line at between 50 and 60mph at NSH. Also good was the fact I could catch the delayed 12:56 to go home.
No bowlage this time as North Sheen is an island platform station and only passengers get in the way. Don’t know why South-Western allow them on the platform.
From NSH Clan Line would head West to Staines where the Windsor and Reading main-lines divide. Clan Line would carry on in a South-Westerly direction on the Reading main line to Virginia Water.
Here Clan Line turns South-East onto a South-Western secondary route through Chertsey and joins the South-Western Main-line at Byfleet Junction. Clan Line then runs South-West to Woking where the Southampton and Portsmouth main lines divide. Clan Line turns South on the Portsmouth main-line to Guildford.
Trivia time. This was the 2nd outward main-line steam excursion of 2012 anywhere in Great Britain. It was the 2nd outward steam excursion of 2012 in the London area. In 2011 there were more than 100. This was the 2nd outward run of 2012 by Clan Line. Clan Line made 17 last year (Not including the 5 as Belgian Marine).
It’s the 2nd outward VSOE Luncheon Special of 2012. In 2011 there were 16 VSOE Luncheon Special’s including the four Christmas trains and the 1 Valentine’s Day Special. Today’s train was the 2nd steam special to run through NSH in 2012. Last year there were 10 steam specials through NSH in the down direction (only 2 on the Up), all VSOE Luncheon Specials.
NSH is a 2-track, two-face single island platform station. Platform 1 is the North side of the island and faces the Up line and has 8 trains per hour passing, all South-Western. Four are non-stop and four are commuter trains to London-Waterloo. Platform 2 is on the South side and faces the Down line and was where I filmed Clan Line. Platform 2 also has 8 trains per hour. Four are non-stop, two for Reading and two for Windsor & Eton-Riverside. Four are commuter trains that stop. Two are for Syon Lane and two are for Kingston-on-Thames.
The station at NSH is relatively young as stations go. It was opened 84 years after the line to Richmond opened and 9 years after the London & South-Western Railway went out of existence. As part of the Southern Railway programme of electrification between the two World Wars the Southern electrified the main-line to Windsor & Eton-Riverside (Commuter trains had already been electrified during World War I). On the date electric trains started running to Windsor, North Sheen station opened. That was 6th July 1930.

British Railways re-built Merchant Navy Class No: 35028 Clan Line speeds North on the Up Fast Line at Purley (PUR) at the head of the Venice-Simplon Orient Express Up VSOE Luncheon Special from Guildford to London-Victoria. Clan Line hauled the Down train earlier this afternoon. It’s Saturday 7th January 2012 at about 15:28 and Clan Line was roughly 7 minutes late. It was running on clear signals and hurrying as not far behind was an Up First Capital Connect Class 319 on a Brighton to London Bridge fast service.
Unfortunately because Clan Line was slightly late I suffered an attack of bowlage. A fast Down Southern express cuts the view of Clan Line from my camera just as Clan Line was passing me. Not a good way to start the New Year but this is my 103rd film and only the 2nd time I’ve been bowled. Not a bad strike-rate.
From PUR Clan Line would head North, passing East Croydon, where the main lines to London-Victoria and London Bridge divide. Then turn North-West and run from East Croydon to Clapham Junction. On the approach to Clapham Junction the Southern main-line curves North-West to North East to run parallel with the South-Western main-line coming up from Wimbledon. The two main-lines parallel each other through Clapham Junction and divide again at Pouparts Junction.
Here, Clan Line drops between the two main-lines as it needs to run via Stewart’s Lane Junction to access London-Victoria on the South-Eastern side.
Trivia time. This was the 1st return steam excursion of 2012 anywhere in Great Britain. It was the 1st return steam excursion of 2012 in the London area. In 2011 there were more than 100. This was the first return run of 2012 by Clan Line. In fact it’s the first time I’ve seen Clan Line, as Clan Line, since 13-Aug-2011.In December 2011 Clan Line made 5 runs running as sister engine 35017 Belgian Marine.
It’s the first return VSOE Luncheon Special of 2012. In 2011 there were 16 VSOE Luncheon Special’s including the four Christmas trains and the 1 Valentine’s Day Special. Today’s train was the first steam special to run through PUR in 2012. Last year there were 24 steam specials.
PUR is a 6-track, six-platform station. Platform 1 is on the Up Fast and is little used. About 14 trains per hour pass Platform 1 bound for London-Victoria or London Bridge. The train operators are First Capital Connect, Gatwick Express and Southern. Clan Line ran past Platform 1 and it was nice to see steam on the fast-line. Platforms 2 and 3 form an island. Platform 2 serves the Down Fast and like Platform 1 is little used. It’s now fenced off from Platform 3 which is where I stood so I had to film over the fence. Platform 2 has 14 fast trains per hour bound for Gatwick Airport (4 Gatwick Express trains), Horsham, Brighton, Lewes and other South-Coast destinations. Two per hour First Capital Connect for Brighton. All other Down Fast trains are Southern.
Platform 3 is the Up relief where four Southern trains per hour call. Two for London-Victoria and two for London Bridge. Platforms 4 and 5 form the 2nd island at Purley. Platform 4 is the Down relief and is served by two Southern trains per hour to Horsham and two Southern trains per hour to Tonbridge. Platform 5 is the Up slow served by five Southern trains per hour. Two to London Bridge and two to London-Victoria. The fifth train is an hourly shuttle that terminates at PUR and runs to and from Tattenham Corner. Platform 6 is next to the still-used goods yard and is the Down Slow and has four Southern trains per hour. Two to Caterham and two to Tattenham Corner.
The station at PUR was opened by the London & Brighton Railway on 12th July 1841 and was called Godstone Road. The following year Parliament decided that the South Eastern Railway route from Oxted should be abandoned and that the London & Brighton Railway had to give their main-line to the South Eastern company. You see, politicians were strange even 169 years ago so don’t be surprised if they do stupid things today. So, in 1842 Godstone Road station served South Eastern trains to Tonbridge and London & Brighton trains to Hayward’s Heath.

This entry features myself interviewing two former McDonald’s employees as they share both awkward and highly laughable experiences. Although we had a good time filming this video, rest assure that their narratives are real. In order for someone to truly understand “the real world” they need practical wisdom via observations and encounters. Working with the public can give almost anyone a ton of that.

A Texas mother who was desperate over being denied food stamps shot her two children and then committed suicide after a seven-hour standoff with SWAT teams at a state welfare office, authorities said.
Ramie Grimmer, 12, and her brother Timothy, 10, were clinging to life at a San Antonio hospital after Monday night’s horrific ordeal, during which Ramie apparently updated her Facebook page to say “may die 2day.”
The chilling incident began about 5 p.m. Monday when Rachelle Grimmer, 38, visited a state welfare office in Laredo to discuss a food stamp application she had submitted in July, police said.
Caseworkers took Grimmer to a private room, where the distraught mom pulled a gun and threatened employees, authorities said.
Police negotiators spent the next several hours trying to persuade Grimmer to bring her children out safely, but she refused, instead haranguing them about the red tape she grappled with while trying to feed her family, The Associated Press reported.
At one point, Ramie Grimmer posted an update on Facebook that said “tear gas ” — an apparent reference to tear gas being fired at the building.
Finally, just before midnight, cops heard three shots and stormed the building, where they discovered Grimmer lying dead in a pool of blood.
Her children were nearby, unconscious and bleeding from gunshot wounds.
Both kids were reported in critical condition on Wednesday.
Authorities told the AP that Grimmer was denied food stamps because she had left some key information out of her initial application.
She and her children had recently moved to Texas from Ohio and appeared to be struggling to say on their feet.
“She was dealing with a lot of issues,” Health and Human Services spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman told the AP.
Grimmer had last contacted the agency in mid-November, but had fallen out of touch since then, Goodman said.

British Railways Rebuilt Merchant Navy Class No: 35017 Belgian Marine gently passes Putney at the head of the VSOE Down Christmas Luncheon Special rail-tour from London-Victoria to Guildford and return on Wednesday 21st December 2011. Today seemed pretty straight-forward and Belgian Marine was only three minutes down. What was unusual, not to say rare, was that Belgian Marine was on the down fast.
That is because it’s a steam engine and it’s the VSOE I hear you cry. Well, no. For reasons I cannot explain the Down Relief closed at 11:53 and hadn’t re-opened when I left. So everything was on the Down Fast.
The fact BM was on the Down Fast had two advantages for me. First, novelty. It was unusual and I like that. Second, I had a better view of it. The disadvantage was that the service trains were all a bit behind time and bunched. So, BM was going slow because it was close behind the Windsor & Eton-Riverside semi-fast and the Down Putney Fast Starter was on Yellow. The big bridge at the Down end is Putney Bridge Road and you get a nice claggy effect as the engine goes under the bridge.
Trivia time. Today was the 5th and final time Clan Line will appear as Belgian Marine. It now goes back to being Clan Line and its first run is scheduled for the 7th January 2012. Today’s train was the 7th and final Christmas Special for 2011. The first was just under four weeks ago when Tangmere hauled the Capital Christmas Express from Swanage to London. It was also the 16th and final VSOE Luncheon Special for 2011. The first was 11 ½ months ago when Clan Line hauled the first Steam Special of 2011. This was also the 44th and final down steam special to pass PUT in 2011. How appropriate to end it for the year, going slow on the fast –line.
Putney (PUT) is on the South-Western Windsor main-line. The second station on the line after Clapham Junction. After PUT Belgian Marine will run on the Windsor Main-Line all the way to Staines. From Staines it will run on a connecting line to the main-line from Waterloo to Woking at Byfleet and New Haw.
PUT has a four-platform lay-out. Platform 1 is the Up relief. There are 8 trains per hour calling there outside of peak hours, all bound for London-Waterloo. Platform 2 is the Up Fast and only a twice an hour semi-fast service to London-Waterloo calls there. Platform 3 is the Down side of the island from Platform 2 and is where I stood. Platform 3 is the Down Relief and has an 8 train per hour service. 2 go to Weybridge via the Hounslow Loop, 2 go to Kingston-on-Thames, 2 go to Hounslow via the Hounslow Loop and 2 go to Hounslow via Richmond
Platform 4, which Belgian Marine ran past, is the Down Fast, which has a half-hourly semi-fast calling bound for Windsor & Eton-Riverside. There are also non-stop service trains passing Platforms 2 and 4.
PUT was opened by the London & Southampton Railway as a station on its branch line to Richmond in July 1846. In January 1850 Putney became a main-line station as the line to Richmond had been extended to Windsor & Eton. Also, trains calling at Putney could access Feltham via the Hounslow Loop. In July 1850 the line and PUT station was taken over by the London & South-Western Railway.
After 36 years the present station was created and the Windsor Main-Line was widened to four tracks between Clapham Junction and Barnes. Most of the 1886 station is extant except on Platform 4.
